Purpose and Philosophy of SGBA
The purpose of SGBA is to benefit the youth of our community by providing means for their athletic and social development through organized sports. The goal is to recognize the importance of all individuals and to conduct our programs in a manner that provides the opportunity for the development of all participants.

Traveling Basketball
SGBA offers traveling basketball for grades 4 thru 9. Traveling basketball is for individuals who are interested in competing at a higher level. It requires a greater commitment, in that each participant is expected to attend all practices and weekend tournaments.

Traveling Basketball Philosophy
Winning is not the primary focus, however, more emphasis is placed on competing and striving to win. Equal playing time is not guaranteed Traveling Leagues. However, over the course of the season each participant will get a fair and ample amount of playing time. Each coach is responsible for assuring this happens. Winning at the constant expense of specific individuals will not be allowed.

Playing Time
For Traveling Leagues the SGBA recommends that every effort be made to allow each team member to play in every game with the following exceptions:

1. Disciplinary action is being taken
2. The player has been suspended
3. The player is injured or sick
4. The player has unexcused absences
5. Games have been shortened due to the time limit or bad weather

The SGBA realizes that there may be conflicts during the season. We ask that when there is a conflict, that the coach be contacted first. "Not calling the coach" is considered an unexcused absence.

The coach has the authority to limit playing time based on these exceptions

In general:

• White teams should have equal substitutions
• Red teams should have equal substitutions for most of the games
• 4-5th and 6th grade Black teams should have equal substitutions for most tournaments
• 7th and 8th grade Black teams will strive for equal playing time for the season
