About SGBA

Mission Statement

Shakopee Girls Basketball Association (SGBA) has been organized to benefit the girls of our community by providing means for their athletic and social development through organized basketball. The goal is to recognize the importance of all individuals and to conduct our programs in a manner that provides the opportunity for the development of all participants. Our programs are organized to provide girls an opportunity to participate in a competitive level of basketball to prepare them for Varsity level play at Shakopee High School.

SGBA Philosophy

In conjunction with our Mission Statement and Code of Conduct, SGBA Philosophy embodies a basketball “architecture” of developing, competing and striving to win for all student athletes. It combines various skill-development opportunities through our In-House, Rec Travel, and Travel programs, player & coach’s clinics, tournament play and open gyms. SGBA actively promotes and supports girls basketball through four key principles; 1) Respect, 2) Work Hard, 3) Have Fun, and 4) No “I” in Team. These elements provide the foundation for our Mission and Philosophy, applicable at all competitive levels, without exception.

SGBA has a Zero Tolerance Policy (ZTP) for all players, coaches, parents and spectators. The ZTP is a “no-exception” approach to define high-level behavioral standards and the associated penalty for any infraction of the policy. We have aligned with other Shakopee educational and athletic ZTP’s to incorporate items such as violence, weapons, drugs, alcohol, etc. This policy has been enacted and incorporated into the SGBA bylaws, Section 12.4 “Zero Tolerance Policy." Copies of all SGBA waivers and policies can be located in the “Board Documents” section of our website, and all participants must agree to the Terms & Conditions before the season starts.

Board of Directors

The Directors of the Organization shall constitute its governing board and shall have such powers and authority as shall be conferred upon them by the Articles of Incorporation, the Bylaws, and the statutes of the State of Minnesota under which this Organization is organized.  The Directors are charged with the overall responsibility for the affairs of SGBA including, but not limited to, adoption, approval and enforcement of all policies and procedures in the best interest of SGBA.

I am excited to share my interest for another term on the SGBA Board of Directors. During my four years on the SGBA Board of Directors I have held the roles of Facility Director and President. The past three years as your SGBA President have been an honor serving our members and making progress on the overall quality of our association. The member experience, growing participation, and leading an inclusive and transparent board have been some of my biggest priorities.

My youngest two daughters Jennah (8th grade) and Kennedy (5th grade) have been members of the SGBA for the past seven years in both the Inhouse and Travel programs. In addition to serving on the board, I have also found joy in coaching them throughout the years. They have both benefited lifelong lessons through the sport of basketball and my hope is to bring those lessons and experiences to all girls in the Shakopee Community interested in the sport of basketball.

I know that our work as the SGBA board is crucial to making the association the very best it can be. In the past four years, we have made some amazing progress to being the association we aspire to be, but we have much work yet to do to reach more girls, improve our competitiveness, and to continue to strengthen our experiences for all girls. I'd appreciate your support and consideration for another term on the SGBA Board of Directors.

Justin Jovle

I am pleased to announce my candidacy for re-election to the SGBA Board of Directors. Serving on the board for the past two years has been a truly rewarding experience, and
I am committed to contributing to the organization's  continued success.   The board is a great group that is equally committed and it has been such a pleasure getting to know all of them.

My passion for SGBA stems from its dedication to fostering the development of young players in a supportive and enriching environment. I firmly believe that organized activities like those offered by SGBA play a crucial role in instilling valuable life skills and fostering a love for the game. Witnessing the positive impact on these young athletes firsthand has been a privilege and reinforces my desire to serve the association.

During my tenure on the board, I have served as both Equipment Director and Equipment & Facilities Coordinator. In these roles, I have prioritized maximizing resources to ensure a positive experience for players, families, and staff. Furthermore, I have focused on streamlining processes and establishing a strong foundation for future board members. While great progress has been made there are still some finishing touches I would like to complete before eventually passing the torch.

My personal connection to SGBA extends beyond the boardroom. My daughter has been actively involved in the program since first grade and will be entering sixth grade this year. I have had the pleasure of volunteering as a coach and team manager, further solidifying my commitment to the association's mission.

Through my combined experience on the board and involvement within the program, I have established strong relationships with players, parents, and fellow board members. My dedication, strong work ethic, and commitment to the organization's values can be a valuable asset to the SGBA Board of Directors.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to the opportunity to continue serving SGBA and contributing to its future success.
Sincerely,
Justin Jovle

MELISSA KRAL

I would like to express my interest in continuing my role with the basketball board. With two years of experience serving as treasurer, I've enjoyed working with the other members of the board and learning about SGBA.

My personal background in sports includes playing basketball and softball through my senior year in highschool and volleyball through college at Winona State. My experiences as a student athlete has taught me the value of teamwork and creating lifelong bonds with teammates. I also learned how to manage my time, be resilient, learn from my mistakes and grow stronger with adversity.

Currently, I have two daughters who have played Shakopee basketball (in house, travel and high school) over the last 9 years. I spent several years coaching them when they were younger and now I get to be their biggest fan. I have loved every minute watching them learn, grow and love playing basketball. I want to continue to help other girls in Shakopee have that same experience.

Thank you for considering my candidacy. I'm excited for the opportunity to continue serving and making a positive impact on Shakopee girls basketball.

STACY ADELMANN

I am excited to announce my candidacy for re-election to the SGBA Board of Directors.

Since joining the SGBA board 2 years ago, as the Web Director, I feel I have been a great addition. My focus has not only been on helping kids gain skills and grow as athletes but more importantly to create an inclusive and kid first approach to everything we do as a board, a coaching staff, and parent. I try an embody this in all the touchpoints I'm part of with the SGBA board.

When I joined the board, there was a disconnect between the genuine energy of the board and how we showed up to our community members on our web, social platforms and within our comms & registration experiences.  This disconnect was mainly due to inconsistency across touchpoints, out of date information, and a variety of fragmented design choices.

Immediately I overhauled the web experience, created pathways to celebrate our players and athletes through social posts & videos, as well as elevated our ‘sgba branded’ experience with redesigning event collateral and marketing collateral. Here are a few highlights I’m excited about.

  • Experiencing SGBA  : In May of 2022 when I joined, I conducted 25+ interviews with board members and active families to learn more about the sentiment and perception of our website, social activities, and general brand feel of SGBA.
    • Web : Many felt our website was clunky, out of date, extremely hard to navigate. Feedback shared was that we didn’t showcase kids and basketball. I immediately did something about that and redesigned the entire website – focused first on the kids and easier access to register or learn more.
    • Social : Many thought only the highschool was on any of the social platforms and that if an SGBA post was made it was weird having it mixed with the highschool messaging. We changed that by separating from the hs booster and mimicked posts on Facebook on our own website.
    • SGBA Brand : I have focused a lot of my graphic design background on redesign and creating consistency across touchpoints for SGBA. From designing the collateral for our hosted tournaments, to registrations, to social posts. I have started to implement consistent templates in instances like tournament placement and signups but have continued to create fun and inclusive videos and posts.
  • Facebook : On July 29, 2023 SGBA took control of the Shakopee Basketball Facebook page where we separated from the Highschool booster. This allowed us to control our message and truly focus on celebrating our young players, many activities and events as well as tag to the Highschool program.
    • I have made over 125+ Photo & Video posts celebrating our players throughout the year as well as showcase the many activities and events SGBA participates in under 12 months.
    • We have gone from 300 followers to over 680+ page followers
    • Although we have only boosted 2 posts in the past 12 months, our reach has grown by 30% and in the last 30 days alone we’ve had over 2k posts engagements.
  • 2023 Spring Try Basketball : With the board, we spearheaded a new approach for the Spring Free Try Basketball event and hosted a 1 hour long event where 60 pre-k to 6th graders signed up and 13 older travel players ran the event. It was a huge success, incredibly fun, and lead to continued participating and signups.

If re-elected I would like to continue to build on the great successes we've had as a board but to also continue to elevate our amazing SGBA branded experience within our community. I also am exited about the idea of how to organically grow engagement and participate through community building activities and sharing. Lastly, as a parent and coach, being part of SGBA has been a great honor and have loved having this added involvement within the community. Thank you for the past 2 years and this re-election consideration.
